November 2006
Dear friends of National Leadership Institute!
I am so excited to "knock at your door" again via e-mail and say "Here I am with NLI news!" We enjoyed God’s blessing over our regular projects and also had travels – more than usual, during the month of November 2006. Let me tell you about all in sequence. NLI volunteers involved in Sunday School and Youth Alpha ministries in four villages are excited by the fruits of those ministries both in their own lives and in the local communities. In Moughni village there are three young ladies who have attended the Sunday School before finishing their high-school, and now wish to teach at the same Sunday school. The leaders train them and gradually involve in teaching with the hope to see the whole ministry run by the local community members one day. Youth Alpha in the villages is going to finish in December, and the “Holy Spirit Week-end” was held in November. We thank God for the alive presence of the Holy Spirit at each “Holy Spirit Week-end” of all Alpha courses we have had so far. As I had told you last time, Dr Petros and Anahit Malakyan were out of Armenia until November 27. They had a three-week trip to the US, during which they spent some precious time with their daughter Aregnaz and son Vahan, and presented CLI/NLI ministry in various places. Dr Petros and Anahit Malakyan were invited to Armenian Gospel Mission (AGM) Banquet on November the 11th, where Mrs. Anahit was honored with a plug by the AGM Board for her ten-year faithful service through AGM/ARDA. Knarik and Armine Nerkararyans from NLI were in the celebration with singing and violin performance. In cooperation of Lake Avenue Church (LAC), Pasadena, CA, Azusa Pacific University (APU), and Christian Leadership International, Inc (CLI) a Cultural Arts Celebration was held at worship center of the Lake Avenue Church. It began with an art gallery exhibition by local Armenian artists in LAC lobby. Then there was a classical music concert with participation of 85 musicians from APU Music faculty and LAC, including the event’s initiator, Dr Duane Funderburk (piano), Dean of the School of Music at APU, Alex Russell (violin), APU professor. The highlight of the evening were the invited musicians from Armenia - well known Maestro Eduard Topchian, Conductor of Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and Karen Kocharyan, assistant principal cellist of the same orchestra. We thank the Lord for the hard work and dedication of CLI Chairwoman Lana Gray, board members Ginny Dadaian, Stan Lazarian and others, who put so much energy and time on the preparation of the Cultural Ars Celebration. After US, Dr Petros and Anahit Malakyan spent a week in London, UK, were they attended the annual “Alpha EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Week” Conference. Here was a whole delegation from NLI to join them in this conference; Arsen Sargsyan - NLI Executive director and “Alpha” ministry coordinator, Iveta Kosyan – NLI Praise Studio founder and “Alpha for Artists” initiator, Hovhannes Hovsepyan, who together with his wife Monica have a vision to start Alpha courses for married couples, and I – Naira Ajamyan, NLI President. We were so pleasantly surprised to see Ashot Avetisyan, a member of NLI Board who now lives and works in Moscow, and had come to join us in this conference. The conference was held at the Holy Trinity Brompton Church and had about five hundred participants from 74 countries. We were so blessed both with the interesting training sessions, and with the experience of praying and worshiping God of the Universe as a part of this huge community – so diverse in cultures and languages, yet so similar in knowing God’s love and salvation! As we had an extra night to spend in England before our flight back to Yerevan, we visited a wonderful Christian family – Paul and Isobel Manouk, at their home. Their names may be familiar to you from my previous update, were I had mentioned about their visit to Armenia. On Sunday morning we had the privilege to make part of their Church’s worship. Meanwhile we enjoyed an interesting preaching about peace by Rev David Earnshaw, and were invited to sing sharakans (medieval Armenian Liturgical songs), that are part of our usual Sunday Liturgy at the Armenian Apostolic Church. Now it’s more than a week that we all are back to our beloved Armenia and our cozy NLI. We were pleased to meet Rev Dr George Hobson and his wife Mrs. Victoria Hobson from Paris here. Praise God, for their presence at NLI to be involved in some of our core ministries while a number of NLI leaders were missing. Dr George taught 6 classes to Christ-Like Leadership students on “Sotteriology” and “Theology, Christology and Pneumatology”. To the students’ opinion, he was one of the most interesting professors that they had a chance to hear during this course, and if for some reason one of them had missed a class, they would take the recording of it and listen. Mrs. Victoria, on her turn, lead two “Club 40” meetings and taught poetry through English, as well as two sessions on “Medieval English poetry in connection with theology” to NLI English class students. She also had individual meetings with the English class students to discuss their ministry objectives and help them to discover their vision. As the discussions were in English, this became “two rabbits in one shoot”! We thank God for bringing his sons and daughters together in such wonderful ways, and hope to have Rev Dr George and Mrs. Victoria as our guests again and again. Now the turn has come for Praise Studio (PStudio) news! As I have mentioned previously, PStudio leaders had organized a discipleship class for the young artists who have joined PStudio after attending the “Alpha course for Artists”. They gave start to the discipleship class in November, and praise God, attendees enjoy it very much. A good friend of PStudio, Mr. Steve Ryan, who has first got in touch with us through Youth With a Mission (YWAM) organization, came to Armenia at the end of November. Being a professional photographer, he taught a course on “Creativity and Scripture” to PStudio young artists in order for them to improve their skills of shooting for God’s glory! A graduate of the second Christ-like Leadership Development class and PStudio member – Armine Khachatryan, is currently involved in Discipleship Training School of YWAM. The school started in Armenia in spring 2006, and now they are preparing to move to Turkey for ministry outreach. A group from NLI community visited Armine in the YWAM base, giving her their blessing before this special trip in her life (well, it’s really “special” for an Armenian to travel to Turkey). Please join us in prayer for Armine to be blessed by her ministry in Turkey, as well as become a blessing for the nation that we Armenians have been in trouble for centuries… Yours in Christ, Naira.
