Alpha Course is a 15-session practical introduction to the Christian faith. Alpha evenings consist of light meals, followed by a talk on a subject central to the Christian faith. After the talk participants divide into groups of 10-12 people. During the course there is a special weekend or day away in the form of retreat, where the work of the Holy Spirit is addressed. The target groups of Alpha in Armenia are young adults, who primarily come from either nominal Christian or atheist family backgrounds. Alpha Course is being taught in two major cities in Armenia, Yerevan (the capital) and Gyumri (Armenia's second city). This course is taught in the context of Armenian Apostolic (Orthodox) Church, which is the heir of 1700 years of rich Christian tradition.
Alpha Course for students in Armenia has been implemented by a group of students from the National Leadership Institute (NLI), located in Yerevan.
Several groups of Alpha leaders have been trained at NLI office to run the Alpha Course. NLI being a lay leadership training institution to support the mission of the national church. Alpha Course has become a prerequisite for those who wish to be involved in Christian ministries. It also helps NLI Christ-like Leadership Development program in student selections.
